Official statement on the Movement for a People’s Party (MPP)
The People’s Party of Texas is dedicated to radical transparency and democratic ideals. The experiences of our compatriots, peers, and other fellow volunteers at the hands of Movement for a People’s Party (MPP) are antithetical to our principles, and we feel compelled to speak out.
The People’s Party of Texas was formed to be independent of MPP, as a direct response to the negative actions of MPP management. In order to successfully bring positive systemic change for, and with, the People, we believe that we must all be willing to listen to the People. The MPP management board has directly and repeatedly ignored and abused people that they claimed to want to work with, to achieve the same goals. Many of our members have experienced ostracism, both in activist or progressive spaces, for holding different views, and encountered the same obstacles in MPP, serving as a huge distraction from the work at hand.
However, the severely toxic experiences we encountered within MPP have not lessened our dedication toward bringing about comprehensive change to Texas, the United States, and the world. We believe that, in order to achieve this change, we must form a movement which must to be grassroots, and built from the bottom-up. That is what we came here to do, and that is what we continue to do.
Many of us are orphans of the duopoly, not listened to by Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Greens, or anyone in government. We want to be heard, and we want to hear from each other. As a result of our treatment in MPP, we have become further dedicated to maintaining a horizontal structure that encourages growth, connections, and active engagement between members and democratically elected facilitators.
Conversely, MPP maintains a hierarchical structure at the cost of members and volunteers. The People’s Party of Texas, on the other hand, invites our community members to actively voice concerns and participate in our processes. We know that the word “democracy” has been thrown around a lot in recent years, and we believe democracy does not mean simply voting once every four years. Democracy means that there are discussions taking place that include the People most affected by those decisions, and that decisions are made together, through a consent-based process. We seek to prioritize the People to build a sustainable People-focused movement, and will not waver in our mutual desire to build a movement to challenge the establishment in Texas.
